This model was discontinued in 2009, and they are getting scarce and collectible. Very good oiled walnut grips w/ silver eagle medallions. Has a very light cylinder turn line and slight high point thinning most noticeable at muzzle. Box has slightly scuffed on edges but is not broken. Accessories include a factory matching-numbered two-piece black and red box, customer portion of warranty card & two spare nipples.
Brass frames factory fitted to some Blackhawks, Super Blackhawks & Old Army Models per Dougan’s Book on Rugers that purportedly lists all brass frames as fitted by Ruger, this one was not listed. Manufactured in 1972 (1st year) with blued grip frame that apparently was later replaced at the factory with a factory Dragoon style brass frame marked MR-3DB having same profile as frame used on Super Blackhawks. Barrel is standard 7-1/2″ with ramped blade front sight & frame-mounted adjustable rear sight. (It has no “Before Using Gun – Read Warnings in Instruction manual…” rollmark.) Factory black box with matching number. Desirable first-year “Pre-warning” production. 44 percussion revolver, blued steel and brass frame. Also, the grip locationg pin hole has to be plugged and redrilled to proper location.A Ruger Old Army. Ruger SA brass grip frames were made in 1971 to 1973, with the bulk being made in 1972. It requires considerable work to fit to the gun's frame, and to work it down to make the grips fit. Target-grade accuracy with ramp front and adjustable rear sights. The New Model grip frame can be fitted to older three-screw models, but requires some fabrication to provide for the trigger return spring.Īs to the brass grip frame from Brownells, there is some discussion on the Ruger Forum as to its worth. Traditional western-style, hand-filling grip has long been acknowledged as one of the most comfortable and natural pointing of any grip style. Conversely, the Bisley can be converted to Blackhawk in the same manner. The Blackhawk or Super Blacckhawk can be converted to a Bisley but also requires a Bisley hammer and trigger.
On New Model Rugers, those with the transfer bar, the grip frames are interchangable. Or, Dave Clements, Clements Custom Guns, makes a wide trigger that is superior to the original factory triggers. The old model Super Blackhawk trigger can be used, or an Old Army trigger if you can find one. these can be replaced with the steel grip frame for the Old Army cap-and-ball Ruger. All older Blackhawks had aluminum alloy grip frames. The older models, referred to as Three-Screw models, require a different grip frame than new models. The simple answer is that all grip frames for Ruger Single Six, Blackhawk, Super Blackhawk, Bisley and Vaquero will either fit, or can be made to fit.
